The Passos Manuel Library (BPM) had its formal origins in 1836, in the decree creating the Library of the Cortes, with an initial collection made up of works from the 15th to the 19th centuries, from the Depository of the Bookshops of the Former Convents, later enriched with works from different sources, which today make up the Old Books collection. It bears the name of its founder, Minister Manuel da Silva Passos.

It currently holds a wide range of works, including monographs and articles from periodicals in all areas, most notably Law, Political Science, Economics and Social Affairs, many of them in electronic format.

The BPM’s main mission is to support parliamentary work by providing national, international and EU scientific and technical information in the different areas of knowledge. To this end, it keeps its collection of monographs, periodicals and electronic documents permanently updated, based on the regular identification and acquisition of new titles.
